Are You Maximizing Your Time while performing Cardio?

In the local gym, Cardiovascular exercise is made out to be a lot more simple than it really is.

Every gym in America is loaded with people doing "cardio."  How many of these people are actually following a specific plan?

I would guess about 25%

The average person in the gym expects to get results just for getting on a cardio machine for an hour.  "I burned 800 Calories in an hour on the elliptical machine!"

It is much more complicated than that.  Just as all resistance training programs should be based on the scientific principles, so should cardio exercise.

The SAID principle basically says it all, no pun intended.  The SAID principle is an acronym for Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands.

Basically, the SAID principle says, "You have to do something your body is not used to doing if you want your body to change."

Cardiopulmonary would a better way to describe "cardio" than cardiovascular training.

Ways you can train your cardiopulmonary or cardiovascular system:

  • Walking

  • Running

  • Jogging

  • Climbing

  • Bicycling

  • Dancing

  • Jumping Rope

  • Rowing

  • Swimming

Circuit Training

Circuit training is weight training with little or no rest in between sets.  Sometimes a circle of many different exercises are used.

The theory behind circuit training is to use resistance training to get a benefit for your heart.  While there is a small cardiovascular benefit, it is nothing compared to cardio activities.

What I'm trying to get at is, "Do your cardio!"  Resistance training alone helps you increase your metabolism by exercising your muscles.  But alone, it is far less effective than the combination of cardio and weight training.

Another reason I want you to do your cardio is because if you do not, I will be forced to include cardio in your training sessions.  I prefer to concentrate on circuit weight training.

Just imagine if you combine a proper nutrition program with intense training sessions and some effective cardio training!
