To get an accurate measure of the true intensity of your workout it a great idea to get a heart rate monitor.  When trying to lose weight it is very important to know your intensity, so you can be in a state of constant improvement.  The telltale sign up cardio exercise intensity is heart rate, regardless of the mode of activity.

Fat Burning Zone Vs. Cardio Zone

 

You have probably seen this at your local gym.  Most machines with a heart rate monitor have the fat burning zone and cardio zone clearly marked.  What happens is when people see that their heart rate is in the cardio zone they slow down their exercise.  They think they are doing the right thing, burning fat, but it couldn't be further from the truth.

 

The lower the intensity exercise, the more fat is burned for fuel.  Sitting on the couch burns a higher percentage of fat than walking on a treadmill.  But does this mean that a better way to become lean and lose weight is to sit on the couch?  I hope the answer is obvious.
