I lived
in the SF Bay Area for
about 10 years and moved
north with my family
(mom, dad, brother &
sister) into northern
California for a couple
of years and ended up on
the Oregon coast in
Newport where I
graduated from Newport
High School as student
body president. Like
many kids I played
baseball my entire life
and dreamed of becoming
a pro baseball player.
I decided to attend
Oregon State University
in Corvallis, Oregon
about 1 hour from the
coast where I went to
high school.
I got
involved lifting weights
and working out when I
was a sophomore in
college. All through
high school I did not
exercise other than play
sports. I was self
conscious of going to
the gym because I
thought everyone would
be staring at me.
Becoming physically
active changed my life.
I
changed my major to
exercise and sports
science and here I am
now. I interned at the
Oregon State University
Strength & Conditioning
Department and helped
strength coach the NCAA
division one student
athletes. I decided to
first get the CSCS
credential instead of a
personal trainer
certification. I did
this because it required
my college degree and
most personal trainer
certifications do not.
The test was very
difficult.
After I
received my degree I
personal trained for a
couple years at
Timberhill Athletic Club
in Corvallis, OR. This
was a wonderful
experience because
Timberhill Athletic Club
had the prototypical
family health club
atmosphere. I also
taught a weight training
class for a community
college.
I had a
very short stint as a
"fitness counselor" at
Gold's Gym which was a
membership salesperson.
I learned a great deal
about how the fitness
industry is run (the
good and the bad).
It was this time where I
wanted to get into the
fitness industry by
making a website.
I first
made mikebehnken.com
which was a website that
focused on me so my
family in California
could see how I was
doing. In 2003, my
next website was
HealthandFitnessRx.com
This website I designed
to showcase my personal
fitness training and
knowledge of exercise
science. It is
still running and
updated to this day.
In April
2004 I decided to
further my career and
relocate back to the San
Francisco Bay Area. I
just finished my Masters
of Science degree in
Exercise Science:
Performance
Enhancement, Injury
prevention at California
University of
Pennsylvania. I also
picked two more
NASM
certifications the CPT
and PES.
In my
spare time I enjoy
traveling, and listening
to music (electronica,
reggae, classical),
learning to play the
piano, working out,
dining out, outdoor
things such as biking
and anything with
friends. I am
currently studying
Japanese and I am
already conversationally
proficient in Spanish.
Recently
I have been to Costa
Rica, Thailand, Mexico,
Japan, Hong Kong,
Philippines, and Brazil
and I am always looking
for a cool place to
visit.
If I had
to describe myself with
one word, it would be
righteous. I hope the
saying "nice guys finish
last" isn't true. I
have a unique ability to
"connect" with anybody I
work or converse with
regardless of their
beliefs, background and
situation.
My best
asset as a trainer is I
have the ability to
create a large variety
of effective workouts
without straying away
from the basic
scientific principals of
weight training. This
makes my workouts fun,
and never stale.
I'm able to put myself
in your shoes and help
you as an adult. I
will not talk down to
you like you're a child.
I'm not a drill sergeant
either. I have
an outgoing positive personality
and a great sense of
humor. Sometimes I
get off track because of
my ADD so you have help
keep me in line.
My goal
as a personal trainer is
to be the best personal
trainer. That is, every
client must achieve
their results. I love
training people and it
is really rewarding to
me when they see their
results over time. I am
100% committed to
helping my client's
achieve their goals and
I prefer to work with
people who are as
committed as am.
