San Francisco Personal Training Can be Fun and Exciting all over the City

Click on a San Francisco District

I consider myself to be very lucky to be a San Francisco Personal Trainer.  San Francisco personal training has been a lot of fun for me.   Since I spend a bulk of my time personal training clients in the gym, I don't like spending much spare time working out in the gym.

San Francisco is a city of hills so getting a good cardiovascular workout while running, jogging, walking or bicycling is usually not very far away.  You can experiment and find some good areas or you can check out some of the little areas I found below.

During personal training sessions I really like to focus on resistance and core exercises.  If you are not able to get in your cardiovascular sessions, I will add some cardio to our workouts.  Usually I will throw in some kickboxing, or jump rope in between sets to make good use of the time.

If you really do not like doing your cardio exercise in the gym, there is usually a great alternative.

Mission District

Since I have been living in San Francisco Personal Training in the Mission district has been what I have spent most of my time doing.  Besides the gyms and Hipsters, there is some good areas to exercise.

Everybody loves Dolores Park and right next to it happens to be some great hills.  You can even find some steps to give you a great cardio jog or run.

Excelsior, Bernal Heights

The Excelsior district in San Francisco is the way to get out of the city if you are on your bicycle.  you can travel down Mission Street and ride all the way to the Suburbs.  Mission St. is not the most bike friendly street in San Francisco though.

Bernal Heights Park is a nice place to visit.  It is not usually crowded and provides a great panoramic view of all of San Francisco.

To get to the top is a decently challenging jog, bike or walk.  If you start from Cesar Chavez you have to walk up to the top of Folsom which is very steep before you get to Bernal Heights Park.

When you are done you can travel down to Precita Park and grab a bite to eat or some water.

The Castro, Glen Park, Noe Valley

The Castro and Noe Valley is a great place to find a good hill.  Twin Peaks is the most challenging obstacle for this San Francisco Personal trainer to climb.

Duboce is a nice hill to climb up.  It will take a lot out of you, but you are rewarded by ending up in Buena Vista Park.

From Buena Vista Park you have plenty of options.

Sunset

If you live close to downtown San Francisco you probably consider the Sunset District "the suburbs," and do not visit very often.  Sunset has a lot of open space and the freshest air in San Francisco.

Head to Ocean Beach for a nice run.  From the zoo on Sloat to the Cliff House is about a 3 mile run, jog or walk.

If you are into the boring nature run / walk Lake Merced has a circular path which you will find hundreds of people running a day.

Golden Gate Park is the most peaceful place in San Francisco, especially on Sundays when auto traffic is prohibited for most of the park.

Recreation included in Golden Gate Park includes archery, tennis, walking, bicycling, jogging, and even browsing in the DeYoung museum if you're up for a slower activity.

There are little known places with great views of the city and sunset.  Turtle hill is a great place to run up some steps, and trails and admire the view of San Francisco's Richmond and Sunset District.

On Moraga (Picture on Right) there is an individual tiled staircase.  Each stair is covered with custom tiles by people in the neighborhood who donated.  It is very cool when the sun is shining on it, looking up.

Richmond

San Francisco's Richmond district is a big area where many people live, and not many people think of as a destination.  That is of course unless you are going there to eat at Burma Superstar, what some say is a great Burmese restaurant.

The good thing about the Richmond district is the close proximity to Golden Gate Park, which divides the Richmond with the Sunset.

Since the Richmond is sandwiched in between Golden Gate Park and the Presidio, a good jog or bike ride is not far away.

If you are bicycling through the Richmond you can find the best bike lanes on the San Francisco Bike Map which you can download here.

Marina, Pacific Heights

The Marina and Pacific Heights are full of hills and open space which you can jog or bicycle with less traffic than most parts of the city.  Try to avoid Lumbard street unless you have a death wish.

Fillmore street is very steep and impossible to bike up or down at some points.  It also has steps which would be a great cardio exercise session to run up or down.

The Lyon St. steps are one of the best cardio workouts in the city.  They are at the intersection of Lyon and Broadway in Pacific Heights.  Running or walking up them gets tiring after the first time.  San Francisco personal training takes place here often.  Every time I have been I have seen personal trainers training their clients.

Make sure to take your limo back to your Pacific Heights Mansion instead of walking.

SoMa, Tenderloin

South of Market is pretty flat and devoid of hills.  If you like running on flat surface SoMa is a great place to run.  The tenderloin is not the best place to exercise.

For bicycling, SoMa is the area you are always going through.  The main East and Westbound bicycle lanes are on Folsom and Howard.

Haight Ashbury

Traveling from the sunset and leaving Golden Gate Park requires you to travel through the Haight.  If you live in San Francisco you know that Haight is a busy street.

If you are running, or bicycling Page St. which is 1 block away and runs parallel with Haight St., has a shared bike lane, little traffic, and all 4 way stops.  Best of all, not Muni.

Park Merced, West Twin Peaks

The west side of Twin Peaks is where you will find some vicious hills.  While they aren't the steepest, they may be the longest.

There are some nice bicycle lanes in this area.

Chinatown, North Beach, Waterfront

San Francisco's Chinatown is not known for exercising but there are a few hills.

Go for a run up Columbus and have a rest at Washington Square park.  You may even get lucky enough to hear some local musicians practicing their jazz music.

Along the entire water front is a great running path and bike lanes.  This is probably the most popular run in all of San Francisco.  You can run all the way from AT&T Park to Fort Point on this path.

If you either like running long distances, or are on a bike, you may continue all the way over the bridge and into Marin County.

Bayview

I do not get out to Bayview very often.  Third street is a good straight away to ride bicycle on but it has been proven to be pretty dangerous because there is no dedicated bike land and tired drivers may not see bicyclists.

If any San Francisco residents know of any good places in the Bayview district to exercise, please feel free to contact me.
